The Westbank Band broke away from the Okanagan Band in October 1963. The Westbank Band is part of the Salishan linguistic group. The Westbank First Nation is one of six native communities that make up the Okanagan Nation. The Okanagan people speak "Okanagan" and are a division of the Interior Salish. The Okanagan People have inhabited the Okanagan Valley for thousands of years. The Okanagan traditional territories extend from south central interior of British Columbia to north central Washington State. The Westbank First Nation has a population of approximately 500 (band members) and 6000 (others). Westbank First Nation has an established local government which operates under the Indian Act. The WFN provides a number of community services, including :an intermediate care facility, a child development centre (day-care and pre-school), multi denominational church, a community centre including a K-7 school. The reserves are fully serviced with water, sewer and other utilities. There are two softball fields, soccer field, regulation sized gymnasium and a multipurpose facility. There are a number of campgrounds on reserve as well as beach-lots available for short term lease.
